1 Family x 12 (March)

I'm posting our family picture before the full Water Park post because, gosh darn it, I'm determined to get out of the "it's the last day of the month and we've got to take our family picture" cycle I've been in for the last few months.

So, there will be more details on the trip in some upcoming posts (and some video too!!), but here is our March picture.  It was the only one we got where Abby wasn't screaming in terror or looking the other way.  One thing we know for sure; when Abby gets nervous or scared, she bites on her fingers.  I have about a gazillion pictures from the water park of her with her fingers in her mouth.  Poor baby!

Pink Racoons (Quilt)

If you're friends with me on Facebook you've probably seen a few quilting posts popping up in my feed over the last few months.  I haven't posted anything official here yet because I didn't have anything finished to show you and many of the projects I'm working on are gifts so I don't want to spoil any surprises.  But, the time has finally come to show you some of my hard work.

I took a quilting 101 class back in October of last year.  After taking a weekly picture of Abby on a yard of fabric I had A LOT of fabric and wanted to make something lasting with it.  So, quilting seemed like the obvious choice.  The class was 6 weeks long and in it we learned the basics of cutting, assembling, quilting and binding a quilt.  Since the class ended I've been working on a number of projects including Abby's queen (!) sized quilt. This small baby quilt is the first piece I've finished and I'm so excited for my cousin Cathy's baby to get here and be able to snuggle in it.

I'm so proud of this quilt!!  I learned quite a bit along the way and will do some thing differently for the next one, but that's what learning is all about.

I cleverly (smile) named this quilt Pink Raccoon and the pattern is called To the Point by Cluck Cluck Sew (I love her patterns!).  The fabric is from the Acacia collection by Leah Duncan.  One great bonus of working with fabric from the same collection or designer is that your quilts coordinate without even trying!  Perfect for a new quilter like myself.

Here's a close-up so you can see some of the free motion quilting I did.  I case you didn't already know, pink loops in the picture are what is actually considered "quilting" it's one of the very last steps in the process and is quite interesting.  Traditional quilters will do this step by hand!!  But, most modern day quilters use their sewing machine to do this step.  However, when quilting the needle is literally only moving up and down.  You've take the feed dogs down and you are in complete control over where the fabric moves and how fast it moves (determining stitch length).  I took a separate full day class to learn how to do just this step.  The quilting I did here is called loopy loops and is a cute, fun way to quilt.

Here's a quick shot of the back of the quilt.  So much time and attention is given to the fronts that people often forget to even look at or show the backs.  For this back I used small strips of fabric that matched the front and incorporated it into the back.

Binding is the very final step of the quilting process.  The binding on this quilt is the dark green border around the edges.  I choose a dark contrasting color to make it pop and I'm so glad I did!

Two final closeups to show you some of the detail that goes into the quilts.

This quilt was specially made for the newest cousin in the Ritterbusch family.  My cousin Cathy is having her first daughter.  I missed the shower in January and the quilt wasn't ready until this weekend, but it should already be there for her when the baby comes so I made it "in time".  Phew!!  I can't wait to meet the new little peanut at the Ritterbusch family reunion in August.

1 Family x 12 (Feb)

Not my best photo....but Ry and Abby look great. Honestly, I've been under the weather with the flu for a few days now and a family picture was the last thing I wanted to do this weekend.  But we had to get our Feb picture in (yes, we technically took in on March 2nd) and you might remember from this post that I'm trying to be present in pictures even if they aren't perfectly staged and professionally done.  So, here's Feburary's picture.

1 Family x 12 (Jan)

I gotta say, if there is one thing I'm good at, it's following through with a project.  Sometimes it feels like I'm juggling a lot of balls with all the projects I've got going on, but this one?  It's pretty simple.  All I have to do is wrangle my husband and my daughter to sit down for three seconds and then have someone snap a picture of us.  Well, it sounds simple right?  So, why am I always scrambling the last few days of the month to make it happen?  Who knows....but you know what?  I'm sure glad I do!

We've got nearly a years worth of these babies now.  I started it back in March on Easter weekend.  My hair was cut above my shoulders and my peanut wasn't even walking yet!  If you want to check out all of our past pictures scroll down on the right hand side of the blog til you get to the word cloud of all the labels for my posts.  They're in alphabetical order so find "Monthly Photo shoot" and you'll get a snapshot of us each month for nearly the last year.

Enjoy!

A letter to my daughter

A letter to my daughter~

Abby, I can honestly say that a year and a half ago I had no idea how much you’d change our life.  You are the sweetest, silliest, happiest peanut I’ve ever met.  Yes, I’m biased and that’s ok!  You’re mine and I will tell you that every day, forever and ever.  Looking back you’ve changed so much and though I’ve got each “first” intricately documented and dated, there’s lots I’ve missed writing down.  Like, when you were a few weeks old you hated bath time.  I gave you baths in the sink for a long long time because it was easier than bending over the tub.  When I thought you hated them because you were cold I started microwaving your towel.  Which led to a towel, on fire, in the kitchen!  Now, when you see the water running, you run for your bedroom, bonk into the chair and stomp your little feet squealing to be undressed.  Then, once you’re free of your clothes you run through the whole house laughing with your little elbows swishing back and forth to keep your balance.  When Daddy asks if you’ve escaped you laugh and laugh and run into the bathroom to get into the tub.

We swaddled you long past the suggested cutoff time but you were happy and slept well, so why mess with what works?  You slept all bundled up like a little baby until you were 7 months old and you know what, you taught me something important in that moment.  You taught me that it’s ok to do things at your own pace….you’ll grow out of it eventually.  It’s one of my biggest pieces of advice for new parents.  I suggest they ask “will this be an issue when my son or daughter is 20 years old”?  If the answer is no (like needing to be swaddled to sleep, needing a bottle at night, or loving a paci), then what the heck?  They are only babies for a short while, let them be babies!!

When you were just about a year old and learning how to walk you HATED shoes.  You’d cry at the very site of them and screamed your head off until we took them away.  Even if they were just sitting on the floor you’d run in the other direction.  It was my fault, I think shoes for newborns are silly….where are you going to walk?  But shoes for walkers, those are a necessity!  It took about a month of you crying and us coaxing to get you used to them but now you get excited when you see your shoes out and laugh when we smoosh them onto your feet.  You look up at us and say “shoe-shoe?” asking if we are going somewhere.

When you were about 14 months old you decided that you were done eating from a spoon that Mom was holding.  In fact, you were done with anything that looked like baby food (except your squeezy pouches which you still love and demand whenever you catch sight of one).  We went through a really picky month where you hardly ate anything and I was worried.  But you know what?  Just a few short months later you’re eating anything and everything.  Last night you stuffed some much broccoli and meat into your mouth that I took away your fork so you could concentrate on chewing.  You always ask for “gookies” which the babysitter gives you too often, but I’ve convinced you that crackers are cookies too and you’re fine with that.  You’ll eat just about anything now and that makes me one happy Momma!!  Oh, and you love it when I share my snacks with you.  You’ve really made me cut back on the Oreos because I’ve got to be a good example (sometimes you catch me sneaking a cookie in the bathroom).

We went through a tough time where you stopped sleeping through the night and woke up wanting a bottle at 3 am nearly every night.  We got into a bad habit and I worried how we’d ever get through it, but you know what?  One night you slept through the night, and then the next night and the next.  Now you’re back to your 13 hours of sleep a night plus naps.

I’ve been trying to teach you to say “love you” for about a month now to no avail.  When I say “say, Love you Momma”, you just look at me and say “Momma” and that’s close enough.  In the last week you started to understand when I say “can I have a kiss?” and you run back to me with your little toothy mouth wide open.  You’ll stop running wherever you were going, turn around and with your mouth wide, give me a big slobbery kiss.  It’s the kind of kiss only a mother can love because it’s filled with more slobber than anyone finds cute…but I can’t stop asking for them!

And the stripping!  Boy do you hate your pants and socks, much to your fathers chagrin.  It takes you all of about 3 seconds to get your pants off and your socks (one or both) strewn across the house.  I’ve taken to letting you go without pants as long as you leave your diaper on.  Once you start taking that off, it’s into zippered jam-jams for you.  But, just like all of the other phases, I know this too is short lived and to just embrace it for now.

I’ll never forget when a girlfriend of mine told me “as soon as you get over the ‘thing’ that’s making you crazy, there’s a whole new ‘thing’ right behind it”.  So, in those moments where I worried that you’d be a picky eater or that you’d be a hippy and never wear shoes, I remember those simple words and remind myself that “this too shall pass”.

We’re in this journey together and I’m learning just like you are.  But, I can tell you one thing for certain.  I wouldn’t trade one of these tough moments to go back to my life before you.  I’m a better person because of you and my capacity to love has grown tenfold since the day you arrived.  I’ve become more patient and more accepting since you came into my life.  I’m able to embrace change in a way that I never could and more than anything, I’ve learned to love each and every single moment (yes, even the tough ones) because those little moments in time are gone all too quickly.  We think we’re the parents and that we’re the ones teaching you….but we’ve got it mixed up.  You’re teaching US how to better versions of ourselves.

I love you, little one.  I love you with all of my heart.

Love,

Your Momma

Christmas 2013

Well, Christmas has come and gone and the year is nearly wrapped up.  I can not believe how fast it all goes.  I swear I remember thinking back in January that the year would fly by and if I'm honest, I had NO IDEA just how fast it would go.

Abby's second Christmas was very different from her first.  Not only is she fully mobile, but she's got her own little personality and we can definitely understand what she wants.  By the time we got to our third round of presents on Christmas day she was finally getting the hint.  She walked right up to the Christmas tree at David and Corda's and started grabbing at presents.  "These are all for me right?!?!"  Poor peanut didn't quite understand that no, they weren't so that brought on some tears.  She was much happier when it was time for everyone to sit down and start opening (course, having a few of her own to open helped too).

A month after getting our own tree up I sort of figured she'd be over pulling at the ornaments.  Nope, wrong.  Much to Ryan's chagrin, our tree came down the day after Christmas.  I'm so happy be done constantly reminding Abby that the ornaments are "pretty" and not to pull at them.  In fact, I told Ryan that I identified with the Christmas story the Grinch.  Hold on...let me explain.  In that story they say his heart grew two sizes that day (Christmas).  I told Ryan that I feel like the day we take down the decorations my HOUSE grows two sizes!  Don't get me wrong, I love to festivity of it all and I love how pretty the living room looks when it's lit by the lights of the tree....but I swear it's like you've got a whole new house when you finally take it all down!

Abby made out great this year!  She got a ton of clothes (which she could care less about but I love!) and toys to fill up a whole room.  She got a tractor, a bowling set, books, a bath frog (that is awesome by the way!), a fake iPad, puzzles, two baby dolls, a tool belt and a full workbench (so she can work like Daddy), a really cool wooden snail, some mega blocks, and a really cool fox sweater (that I can't find the link for....pictures later).  I'm sure I'm forgetting some things because the house is packed and Abby is in seventh heaven but she loves everything and we are so thankful for family and friends that love us so much.  We are one lucky family!

**See, finally getting the idea of present opening :O)

Christmas was a long day for all of us (especially Abby).  She did great considering we drove over 150 miles and went to three houses in one day.  She got in a nice long nap at Dan and Ellyn's which I was SO grateful for.  I got to sit down and eat brunch slowly at my own pace and enjoy every bite instead of trying to feed her and rushing to finish to occupy her when she decided she was finished eating.  When she finally woke up from her nap she had her own personal brunch complete with french toast casserole, quiche and fruit.

But, in typical baby fashion, no matter how many cool toys she got we weren't surprised that this one occupied her for a full 10 minutes.  Gotta love kids!

1 Family x 12 (December)

Well, how can we take our family picture for December without Santa??

Can you believe it?  Santa came to visit Grandpa and Grandma's house on Christmas Eve!  Abby is one lucky lady...though, she was pretty scared.  That's ok.  Next year :O)

Merry Christmas everyone!!
