Halloween fell on a Friday night this year, so we used the weekend before to get all of the fun holiday activities. For a few years now Jamie has grown pumpkins for the girls in a little patch at the entry to their neighborhood. This year she wasn't sure how big they'd be because she started late, but the girls ended up with great sized pumpkins and they had a great time carving them.
Neither Jamie or I can quite figure out why, but this years carving was one of the most chaotic, messiest activities we've done in a long time. For some reason the girls had pumpkins all over the floor and at least one or two kids cried because their ideas weren't coming out coming out the way they had them planned in their heads.
Hazel had an idea to carver hers into a dragon flying but somehow that wasn't turning out so she cut it in half fully to try and make a hamburger (??) and when that also wasn't working, she turning it into a cat. Odd, but...that's Hazel! And, I gotta say, she used her creativity and wasn't too upset when she needed to pivot.
Abby's idea was to make a carousel and she did an amazing job. I thought we had a crisis teed up when the horse broke, but my suggestion of using toothpicks did the trick. We didn't pick winners, but if we did, Abby would have won.
We've been recreating this picture of the girls for years...sitting in this way with matching pjs on. Jamie always remembers to take it so I can take exactly zero credit for recreating it year over year.
I couldn't miss the girls Halloween parade at school...it's Abby's last year at Riley! The last year I'll have them both under this roof. I'll get one more year of them being in the same school, Abby's senior year of high school...I can't believe I'm already typing phrases like that!
This year's theme was Dunkin Donuts (Jamie's suggestion and I loved how easy this one was to pull together). I am not sure how many more years Abby will be trick or treating with us. This year she was almost too cool for school and she didn't love the donut idea but we conned her into it in the end. Next year, I'm not so sure we'll be so lucky. Abby is already putting out the idea that we all go as either Greek Gods/Goddesses or our favorite book characters. We'll see - that might be too hard for the little girls. Maybe this is our last year with a big big group costume.
Ryan started his costume about a week before - and honestly, it turned out great! It wasn't super easy - all of the white paint peeled off after the first attempt at the words, but he got it in the end. I'm really glad he did the cup, I think it really pulled the group together. Between Ryan's costume and the girl's donut hole boxes, those were the two things that got others to understand our costume. We got lots of compliments and you know I loved being in a nice warm outfit!
