It's been a few years in the making, but this summer we finally got it on the calendar; a date to go to Road America and check out the races/camping in that area. Ryan's been wanting to go for a few summers now and this summer we finally worked it in. The original plan was to have Lauren and Brian join us too. Ryan knew Brain would enjoy the racing and the cars. But this summer they spent 10 weeks in Croatia and Germany and they'd gotten home only a week earlier so they decline the trip. There's always next summer!

The races were fun. The kids were champs - the put up with a lot of us "figuring it out" between biking to the races, and not knowing what to do when we go there, or how to get around, to the two extreme rain storms that blew through during the day....it wasn't our most seamless trip, but I was thankful to have our old faithful's in tow (The Brackemyers who we are pretty willing to put up with anything). We learned a lot and while I'm not sure this trip is a "must repeat every summer", it for sure will make it's way back on the calendar at some point.
The race cars are nearly impossible to capture while they are racing - in fact, the number of people walking around with professional looking cameras was ASTOUNDING to me. I did not expect to see so many race fans also being photography fans. Super interesting.
Two huge storm systems rolled through during the races on Saturday. We managed to dodge both of them, but not without a lot of effort. It was one of the wettest, rainiest, muddiest camping trips we've done in a long long time. We had to completely pressure wash the camper when we got home....there was mud everywhere! It was on the couch, on the floors, the outdoor rug was sopping wet with mud. I was so glad to be home and get everything clean again - including Penny.
To date - this is my most favorite photo of Penny. She's so adorable...and also, a pain in the butttttttt!
